Many people have the dream of owning a dog and have it for many years as a loyal part of the family. Although this is something that many families choose to do, it is important to know that a trained dog versus an untrained dog will make a big difference in your life both in the home and out. Read below for some important reasons why training your dog is important.

Safety

Although dogs are a domesticated species, they can still pose a threat to people if they are bigger breeds. Some dogs just get too excited and accidentally hurt people or they may have a history of abuse and have trust issues leading them to lash out at people sometimes. A great way to gain control of your dog’s behavior is to take them to training classes where you can learn how to help your dog behave better with people and other dogs.

It is all too common that people take their untrained dogs out for walks and they end up getting in fights with other dogs. This is not a situation you want to get yourself or your family members into, so training your dog early is a great way to maintain your own safety and that of others.

Better Behavior

Dogs are naturally drawn to humans due to centuries of being our companions, but that does not mean that they are automatically able to follow commands and behave how you want. When you get a puppy, they are a blank slate and need guidance in order to behave well in the world. Taking a leadership dog training course means that you and your dog will work together to ensure that their behavior is good at home and when they are out in the world. Behaviors like chewing everything and going to the bathroom in the house will only stop if they are trained out of your dog.

Socialization

For many dogs, training school is a great opportunity to interact with other dogs and work on their socialization. This is a problem for many dog owners who got their dogs during the pandemic because they didn’t have many opportunities to take their dogs to meet other dogs due to restrictions. The great thing about training is that it is not just for puppies. If you want your dog to get better at socialization, then some training courses are a great way to do it in a controlled and safe environment.

Strengthened Bonds

Going through a training course with your dog can help you forge a deeper bond with them that will last for their entire life. Your dog is a member of your family and the more you understand their behavior and they understand yours, the better life will be for both of you. If you take a training course with your dog, they will see you as the leader of the pack and will follow you wherever you go. This is a very special bond that will continue to grow the more that training techniques are applied to daily life.

Mental Stimulation

Dogs naturally have a lot of energy and that energy can either be put towards wreaking havoc in your home or doing productive activities. In dog training, dogs learn how to do tricks, follow commands, and listen to their owner’s voice. These courses can be rigorous and help to wear out puppies who need extra stimulation. After an eventful training day, your puppy will come home and crash, meaning that you will not have to worry that they are getting into something or running around. This kind of mental enrichment is great for growing pups who need a lot of attention and activity as their brains develop.

Easier Vet Visits

Having basic training techniques instilled in your dog’s brain can come in handy in tricky situations like vet visits. The vet is often a very stressful place for dogs, but if you have trained your dog and they feel comfortable with the routine of commands, these basic training techniques can make any vet visit more manageable. Your vet with thank you and both you and your dog will have less stress whenever vet appointments come up.

Making the choice to train your dog from the beginning is one of the best things you can do as a dog owner. It not only makes their life better, but it also shows that you are a responsible pet owner who cares about the wellbeing of their family, their dog, and any human or animal that interacts with them.
