Having an entertainment area in your home is a great way to enjoy a dedicated space when you are having friends over, hosting a party or having fun with your family. Here are a few tips for creating the perfect entertainment area that reflects your style.
How Do You Entertain?
The first thing you need to do is decide what type of entertainment you like to host? Do you want a space for intimate dinners, or do you want a space that has a couple of 85 inch TVs so you can watch sports?
Game Nights
Entertainment areas for a game night require a big table, comfortable seating, and good lighting. This means the room should be designed more like a cozy living room than like a mini nightclub or sports bar.
Parties
For parties, you want a space that is open and easy to walk around and dance in, but still has some seating. Depending on the layout of your home, a mini bar or an area for food may be helpful, which provides easier access than having to go back and forth to the kitchen.
Watching Sports
Watching sports is fairly generic, but this type of entertainment area focuses on things such as TVs or projector screens, comfort, and a table or two for food and drinks. If you have lots of friends over for these events, large couches should be a priority.
Relaxing with Friends
Finally, this type of entertainment space changes with your wants and needs, but in simple terms, it is a space for dinner parties, chatting, brunch, book club, or anything in between. Once again, comfort is important, but extra furniture like coffee or dinner tables can be added depending on your needs.
Seating
Seating should match the amount of people you expect to be entertaining. While this doesn’t need to be exact because, for example, not everyone is going to be sitting during a party, it should be something you prioritise.
If you are short on space, you can also opt for furniture such as ottomans, which can be used as both a chair and a makeshift table if or when needed.

Food & Drink Area
A food and drink area can be a relatively loose or specific idea. In essence, it is simply a spot where you can serve/eat a meal and somewhere to put your drinks. This can be a coffee table, dinner table, a home bar, or something similar.
Having to constantly go in and out of the space to get food and drinks can ruin the flow of the room and can be inconvenient; therefore, even if it is just a small table, it is better than having nothing at all.
Incorporate Your Patio/Garden
If you can, it is the idea to incorporate your patio or garden into your entertainment space. This is a great idea during the Summer, as you can swing the doors open, have a barbecue going, and bring the outdoors into your home.
In Winter, it can be the perfect place to have a few heaters or a fire, and allow people to cosy up with a warm drink as the night winds down.
The Flow of the Room
Never overlook the power of a room that has the right flow. When it comes to room design, “flow” refers to how easy it is to move around a space without constantly being in the way of others, bumping into others, and being able to move around the space easily.
The easiest way to figure out if your room has the right flow is to walk all the paths yourself. Sit everywhere, stand by your tables, walk from one side to the other, etc. You will quickly notice if something is in the wrong place or if you need to adjust your layout.
Versatility
Versatility in both the room and the furniture you choose is vital if you are short on space or don’t have a room that can be dedicated to entertaining. However, if this is the case, that definitely doesn’t mean you can’t have an entertainment room in your house.
Room
The versatility of a room is fairly self-explanatory. If you need a space to act as both an entertainment area and a family room, then it is important to find the middle ground so that you don’t design a space that is aimed too much at one or the other.
This means having a space that is comfortable and cozy and fit for everyday use, but can easily turn into a space for a dinner party or a gathering without having to change much.
Furniture
As mentioned previously, versatile furniture should also be a priority if you are short on space. They allow you to have the best of both worlds, without having to sacrifice something to make space for something else.
For instance, if you want a pool table, choose one that can also be used as a dinner table. If you want a couch for your family and for entertaining, a modular one allows you to create one large couch or two or three separate seats.
