Shopping for CBD products for the first time can feel a little intimidating. Understanding the different terms and measurements listed on the label can quickly become confusing for those just starting out with CBD.

While not all of the information listed on CBD products is necessarily needed to pick the best CBD oil, a few critical pieces of information will help. One of these is the amount of CBD that is contained within the product.

Most brands sell their popular products in several different strength options, and so it is essential to know how to choose the right choice.

Here is a quick guide to understanding how CBD oil strength and potency are measured to make shopping for CBD a little bit less stressful.

What Is Meant By Strength?

The strength, or potency, of a CBD oil, or any other CBD product, is displayed in one of two ways on the product’s label. The first is as a percentage and is the method that used to be the most common, stating how much of the total solution is CBD.

The second way is by displaying how many milligrams of CBD are in each product. This has become the method used on most modern CBD products, although some brands do still use a percentage. The metric measurement is used to clearly show how much CBD in milligrams there is within a product.

The problem with both of these methods is that they do not consider the quantity of the product as a whole. This makes it difficult to compare two products with different volumes, especially for those new to CBD.

If, for example, two different CBD oils both say that they contain 10mg of CBD, it would be an easy mistake to think that they are the same strength. But, this might not necessarily be the case as one oil might have a total volume of 10ml while the other might contain 100ml of oil.

Understanding and Comparing the Strength of Different Products

The best way to work out the strength of a CBD oil is to calculate how much CBD will be contained in each drop. There are a few reasons why this can be helpful.

Firstly, a drop is the same quantity of liquid no matter which product is being used. Secondly, most people take a set amount of drops at a time, making it a handy way to think of CBD oils when it comes to strength.

As a rough guide, a 10ml bottle of CBD oil will contain on average 200 drops. Using this as a starting point, it becomes much easier to work out the strength of a product.

If, for example, a 10ml tincture says that it contains 1000mg, this will work out at 5mg per drop of oil. At the same time, a 20ml tincture that includes 1000mg of CBD will only pack 2.5mg into each drop.

Using this method, it becomes a lot easier to work out which product is more robust. The 20ml tincture might sound like the better option at first glance, but it is actually the weaker of the two products.

Comparing Price and Strength

While the quality of CBD products is always crucial when deciding between two different products, the price and value of the product can be equally as important.

It is easy to think that larger tinctures will offer better value. A 20ml tincture, for example, might on the surface look like it is providing a better deal than the 10ml tincture. However, by calculating how much CBD is contained within each drop, it might become clear that the 10ml is a better value.

The more CBD that is contained within each drop of oil, the stronger it is, meaning that fewer drops will be needed in order to achieve the desired effects. When it comes to value, a more potent oil might contain less total liquid but will last much longer than a higher volume but the weaker product, making it a better value.

Choosing the Right Strength CBD Oils

The strength and potency of a CBD oil matter not only for getting the best value out of the product but also to ensure the desired effects are achieved.

Everyone reacts slightly differently to CBD, and therefore opting for the most potent oil is not always the right option. Several factors determine a person’s CBD tolerance, such as their metabolism, weight, and how often they use CBD.

The higher a person’s tolerance, the more CBD will be needed at once to achieve the desired effects. Over time, the body builds a natural tolerance to CBD, requiring a person to slowly increase the amount of CBD consumed.

Somebody new to the world of CBD is likely to have a very low tolerance and therefore might not need the most potent oils that are available. Understanding how to work out the strength of a CBD product could help to save money as lower-strength oils tend to be cheaper.
