Having company over is definitely one of the more exciting parts of owning your own home, but it’s important that you make sure everything’s prepped and ready for your guests’ arrival. And while areas such as the kitchen and bathrooms definitely need some attention, most of your cleaning efforts should be focused on the guest bedroom.

Bed and Mattress

Chances are that the bed in your guest bedroom hasn’t been cleaned for a while, but never underestimate the importance of welcoming your company with a well-made and properly cleaned bed. When left uncleaned for long periods of time, impurities like dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate on the surface, which can compromise the hygiene of the mattress.

After removing all fabrics and linens from your mattress, you have the option of throwing them into the washing machine and giving them a cleaning of their own. Then, take the time to assess the state of the mattress:

  • No Visible Stains: If your mattress doesn’t have any visible stains or areas that need to be dealt with, then simply run a vacuum cleaner over the entire surface to remove all traces of dust and dirt. Make sure to use several passes for each area and to get into the corners and crevices.

  • Some Visible Stains: You can either use a mattress cleaner as instructed or add a small amount of mild detergent to some warm water. Dampen a clean cloth or sponge with your cleaning solution, then gently blot at the stained area. Repeat this as many times as needed, working from the outside going in, and using as little moisture as possible. Then, blot away the excess moisture and let the mattress dry completely.

  • Stubborn Odors or Dampness: Get a box of baking soda and cover the entire mattress with a generous amount. The baking soda will absorb and neutralize any lingering odors, while also soaking up any moisture that may have built up. After a few hours, use your vacuum cleaner to remove the baking soda. Alternatively, you can use a dampened cloth should the baking soda transform into a pasty substance.

Carpets and Flooring

Cleaning your floors before your guests arrive is as simple as using your vacuum cleaner to remove any trace of dust and dirt. When doing this, make sure that you really get into the corners of the room that are often neglected, as this is often where impurities end up accumulating. You can also choose to mop your floors instead, which will give you the opportunity to disinfect them with the right cleaner.

If there are any carpets in the room, it’s important that they are also given some attention:

  • Regular Cleaning: If there aren’t any urgent problems with your carpets, you can simply run your vacuum cleaner over them. Not only will this remove impurities, pests, and allergens, but it also has the added benefit of fluffing up the fibers and making your carpet look much better.

  • Stain Removal: Vacuum up your carpet before pretreating the stained area by spraying it with equal parts water and white vinegar, which will help loosen up the stain. Then, add a few drops of mild dish soap to a bowl of water and use a cloth or sponge to apply this sparingly to the stain until it has lifted. Use a clean cloth or paper towel to absorb as much moisture as possible before leaving the carpet to dry completely.

  • Odor Control: Just like with your mattresses, applying a liberal amount of baking soda to your carpet can help eliminate any unwanted odors. Leave this until the odor has disappeared before vacuuming everything up.

Tables, Shelves, and Other Surfaces

Just like with the floors, flat surfaces like tables and shelves can accumulate quite a bit of dust, especially when they haven’t been cleaned for a while. Wiping these with a microfiber cloth will ensure that every speck is easily removed with a single swipe.

If you’re looking for an additional disinfection step, then you can either go in with an all-purpose cleaner and follow the instructions, or combine equal amounts of water and white vinegar into a spray bottle. Spray your chosen solution over the surface and leave it for a few minutes before wiping it away with your microfiber cloth. White vinegar’s main ingredient is acetic acid, which is a common ingredient found in many commercial cleaners nowadays.

Final Touches

They say that it’s all in the details, which is why you should ensure that your guests have everything they need. This means providing things like extra pillows and blankets, towels, toiletries, and more, as well as providing personal touches that’ll make the space feel much more comfortable and welcoming.

It’s also important to ensure that everything is properly cleaned and spotless, including glass mirrors, fixtures, and surfaces. As stressful as it can be to find streaks when cleaning glass items, you can avoid them completely by either using a commercial glass cleaner or combining equal parts water and white vinegar in a spray bottle. Then, spray your chosen solution over windows, mirrors, and other glass surfaces before wiping it away with a microfiber cloth.
