Liberty [To Me] : Mother of Exiles
by PAGE Editor
Recent documentary displaying the history and tenement of the Ellis island called Liberty: Mother of Exiles is airing on HBO, October 18th, at 8 pm. This film holds “The New Colossus” poem, at the base of the Statue of Liberty, to the standard for the American dream and its global embrace, while exploring the past and present of the Statue and it’s meaning.
The documentary trails the “godmother” of the Statue, Diane Von Funstenberg, who is in the discovery of why the Statue’s architect, Auguste Bartholdi, and his dream of constructing such a behemoth. Going deep into his challenges in rendering his dream to reality, reflecting the story of all the immigrants who have passed through to Ellis Island and saw ‘Liberty’ for the first time. While DVF is admittedly still learning to the true meaning of the statue she is an advocate for all immigrants in this HBO-produced documentary film.
Liberty: Mother of Exile is directed by Fenton Bailey in production with Randy Barbato, featuring Russian street artist Denis Ouch. Look for this film to fill you in on a history that is currently being tarnished, as the filmmakers themselves were unaware, and unassuming of the current state of immigration here in America while making this film which started production back in 2016.
