Missoni Brings Femininity To Menswear In Its Ever-Expanding World
Written by Joseph Benjamin
The narrative of the Missoni brand is emotionally powerful undertones of sustainability. Missoni has a rigorous discipline of sustainability using this simple gesture to constantly reinvent the brands identity.
The latest collection from Missoni is a story of feminine strength, empowerment a self-awareness, told in straight lines, bold clean volumes, skin flashing throughout and the womanly taste of self-decoration – using jewelry to add further layers to the story.
“The latest menswear collection from Missioni is just as bold in shape, sensual, and equally glittery. The neatness of the designs lets geometry explode in a frensy of patchwork that explodes in undertones of femininity.”
- M Missioni
The freewheeling Missoni Spirit is still there, but it marches to a beat if horizontal, diagonal and vertical stripes that shift, move, swing, wrap on and around the body, leaving no way to froth and frivolity up to a point. The glittering of metals adds sparkle to a dense palette of earthy and burnt toes lit with dashes of red and turquoise.
Playful curiosity is the basics of a woman’s discovery of self. As the story continues, the outerwear is bold and protective; blouson-cardigans have kimono closures and cropped tailored jackets in boxy shapes are worn with big trousers tucked into boots.
Underneath the dresses and leggings cling to the body or reveal it, suggesting body consciousness as just another facet of feminine power. Even the new bags with narrow scarves as straps have an assertive geometric presence. After dark, patters melt and everything else gets soft.
On February 28, in Miami M MISSONI opened its first flagship boutique in the Aventura Mall, one of Miami’s ultimate fashion destinations. The boutique, conceived of by Margherita Maccapani Missoni, M Missoni's Creative Director, in collaboration with the Italian architect Barbara Ballabio of BBArchitetti, presents a new design concept for M Missoni that alters the genetic codes of the Missoni DNA; unearthing fragments of forgotten gems, archive designs, and iconic details to reconfigure them in unexpected and contemporary ways.
The design of the space incorporates a mix of contemporary pieces with others from Missoni’s forgotten past, combining ultramodern displays and architectural details with vintage Missoni furnishings, tapestries, and reproductions of original prints and artworks. A constant #MissoniFeeling permeates the space as the codes from Missoni’s B-side are reimagined in novel ways to create an entirely new and unconventional aesthetic that encapsulates the playful and ironic character of M Missoni.
This refashioned aesthetic is interwoven into varying design elements, from the terrazzo flooring and textured façade to the colorful furnishings and charming display units.
Remix, reuse, and respect are guiding principles inherent to the M Missoni ethos and mission. The careful selection of design materials reflects the environmentally sustainable values of the brand. Vintage pieces from the MissoniHome collections experience a revived existence through upcycling, while several tapestries have been created from patchworks of remnant fabrics.
The bases of the display racks are made from engineered stone using oddments of Carrara marble pebbles. In addition, several design elements are made from colorful recycled glass created from a pâte de Verre process; natural steel; and a particular blue PaperStone®material, the first composite material in the world to be manufactured entirely from post-consumer recycled paper and certified FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council).
This inspiring design concept for M Missoni draws on the celebrated history of Missoni and then disrupts it, reshapes it, and reinterprets it to create something entirely new, yet familiar, while paving the way for a future that is still to come.
