Speaking Volumes: Kenneth Cole and Lingua Franca Reframe Fashion as a Platform for Free Expression

In an era where fashion is increasingly called upon to do more than just clothe the body, the return of Kenneth Cole and Lingua Franca signals a continued commitment to using design as a vehicle for dialogue.
Now formally unveiled by Kenneth Cole Productions, the limited-edition capsule—launching April 9, 2026—marks a renewed alignment between two brands that have consistently treated fashion as a conduit for cultural engagement. Positioned at the intersection of craft and conviction, the unisex, seven-piece collection centers on a singular, urgent premise: freedom of speech is not a passive right, but an active responsibility.
Anchored in the principles of the First Amendment, the collection translates language into wearable declarations. Phrases such as “Free the Speech,” “Unmute Yourself,” “Shut the Hate Up,” “Speak Even If Your Voice Shakes,” and “Read Between the Lies” are rendered through Lingua Franca’s signature hand-embroidered technique—each stitch reinforcing the intimacy and intentionality behind the message.
The capsule includes sustainably sourced Maxine sweaters in black and white, unisex cashmere sweaters in black, white, and grey, and unisex tees in black and white—each piece designed to function as both wardrobe staple and cultural prompt. In merging Lingua Franca’s hand-crafted sensibility with Kenneth Cole’s advocacy-driven ethos, the collection underscores a shared belief: what we wear can—and should—reflect what we stand for.
“At a time when freedom of speech feels more important than ever, we hope these messages inspire people to stand up, speak out, and use their voices for good,” said Kenneth Cole, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer of Kenneth Cole Productions. His perspective reinforces a decades-long commitment to aligning business with social impact—an ethos that continues to define the brand’s evolution.
Developed in collaboration with Rachelle Hruska MacPherson, the capsule deepens a partnership first established in 2024. For Hruska MacPherson, whose brand has built a following through language-driven design, the collaboration is both a continuation and an amplification of Lingua Franca’s core philosophy. “Language has always been at the heart of Lingua Franca, stitched by hand and worn with intention,” she notes. “This collection is a reminder that free speech isn’t abstract; it’s personal, powerful, and worth protecting.”
Beyond its visual messaging, the collaboration extends into tangible impact. Ten percent of proceeds from each product sold will benefit the Committee to Protect Journalists, the world’s leading independent press freedom watchdog. Founded in 1981, the organization operates in more than 120 countries, advocating for accountability and providing direct, often life-saving support to journalists facing threats. In this context, the capsule moves beyond symbolic expression, channeling consumer participation into meaningful, global advocacy.
For Kenneth Cole Productions, the initiative reflects a broader, decades-spanning mission to leverage fashion, storytelling, and business as forces for social progress. With distribution spanning 24 countries and a portfolio that includes multiple labels, the company has long framed its work through the lens of purpose—balancing performance-driven design with cultural relevance.
Similarly, Lingua Franca’s trajectory—from its founding in 2016 to raising over $1 million for more than 200 charities—underscores the growing resonance of slow fashion rooted in message and meaning. Its hand-embroidered pieces, often worn by figures across entertainment, politics, and the arts, have transformed quiet craftsmanship into a form of visible advocacy.
Against a backdrop of heightened cultural division and global scrutiny of free expression, this collaboration arrives not as a reaction, but as a reaffirmation. Kenneth Cole and Lingua Franca are not attempting to resolve the complexities surrounding free speech; rather, they are reinforcing the importance of participation—of using one’s voice, however small it may seem.
Available exclusively via both brands’ digital platforms, the capsule represents a continued evolution in how fashion engages with the world around it. No longer confined to aesthetics, today’s most resonant collections operate as frameworks for dialogue—inviting wearers to not only observe culture, but to shape it.
For Kenneth Cole and Lingua Franca, the message is consistent, and increasingly urgent: expression is a right—but more importantly, it is a responsibility.
