10 basic rules of skin care
By PAGE Editor
Skin is the largest organ in our body, performing many important functions. It protects internal tissues and organs from mechanical damage and infections, participates in gas exchange, removes excess water and metabolism byproducts. It allows us to feel pain, temperature, pressure, and performs many other essential tasks that we don't even think about in our daily routine.
But how do you properly care for your skin? Experts, dermatologists, and cosmetologists can talk for hours on this topic. If you are just starting to delve into facial care, don't be intimidated: the numerous recommendations can be reduced to a dozen simple rules. Start with them and gradually deepen your knowledge to maintain beauty and youth!

Rule 1: Be consistent
The rules of daily facial care are called so because you will have to pay attention to simple but effective procedures every day. Don’t perceive this as a dull duty. In this case, you are acting only in your best interests.
Remember that after applying skincare products, the result will not appear the next day. Any product, even the most expensive and effective, needs time — the skin must absorb the active ingredients and start “living differently.” And if you don't see results on the third day of using a new serum or cream, it's no reason to get upset and put the product on the far shelf. It is quite possible that it just needs a little more time and your patience 🙂
Rule 2: Correctly determine your skin type
When choosing skincare products, focus not only on the brand and price but also on your skin type. It can be compared to the size of shoes or clothes. Imagine you bought shoes a couple of sizes too big or too small. You really liked the color, and the manufacturer is reputable. But, agree, you are unlikely to feel comfortable in such shoes.
The situation is similar with cosmetics. Brands produce products designed for different skin types:
Normal
Dry
Oily
Combination
Sensitive
Each type has its own characteristics and requires care using different components. How do you correctly determine your skin type? You can do this yourself using our tips or consult a specialist to avoid unwanted problems.
Rule 3: Adapt your care to the time of year
One set of cosmetics for all seasons is a losing option. The products should match the time of year and the needs that arise in the skin at that moment.
In summer, prefer cleansing, moisturizing, and good protection from ultraviolet rays. You can also regularly use "summer" AHA acids — ferulic, lactic, or mandelic. They will help clean the skin surface from sebum and dust, even out skin tone, and eliminate flaking.
In winter, prioritize nourishment and protection from frost/wind. Cold season products have a higher concentration of nutrients and a denser texture. They may also contain components that should be used with caution in the summer, such as retinol and high-concentration acid peels.
By adding or removing certain products depending on the season, you will achieve maximum effectiveness in your daily care.
Rule 4: Less is more
If modesty decorates a girl, then it is definitely in the matter of choosing skincare products. Don’t buy everything that consultants in stores offer, plus "that cream" in a beautiful box.
Choose quality skincare products, preferably from the same brand and line. Start with the basics and gradually add additional items to enhance the results. Believe me, your skin won't be thrilled if you suddenly bombard it with a dozen (or more) new gels, tonics, and creams.
And of course, the more products you have on your shelf, the more often you will want to change them, which can significantly affect their effectiveness (see rule 1 🙂).
Rule 5: Exfoliation is important
Exfoliation (peeling, scrubbing) is the process of removing dead cells from the skin's surface. Don’t neglect it!
The skin is constantly renewing itself. Although metabolic processes slow down with age, peeling remains an important component of care. It removes dullness and roughness, prevents pore clogging and inflammation. Also, if you regularly exfoliate dead skin cells, the active ingredients in your skincare products will work much better.
Rule 6: Take care of the skin microbiome and pH
The normal pH of our skin is 4.7. At this level, the balance between "good" and "bad" skin bacteria is maintained, allowing the skin to cope with external negative impacts. However, tap water or ordinary soap can disrupt this balance, leading to redness, sensitivity, flaking, and other unpleasant symptoms.
To avoid this, pay attention to the pH of the facial products you use — it should be “acidic,” typically between 4 and 6. This will help compensate for the alkaline pH of tap water and keep your skin microbiome healthy, leaving your skin radiant.
Rule 7: Always remove makeup
Even after dizzying parties.
Even when you have no strength left.
Even if you promise yourself "a minute to lie down and then definitely wash up."
Don’t give in to the provocations of your sleepy inner voice and thank your skin for a great day by removing makeup. Otherwise, you risk getting pimples and dermatitis, as microorganisms will "celebrate" your rest by actively multiplying in dust, sebum, and makeup residues.
If you forget about the other steps of care once (but only once!), I won’t tell anyone. But falling asleep with makeup on your face is taboo!
Rule 8: Don’t forget about your neck and décolleté
Nothing reveals skin problems or age-related changes like "sad" neck and décolleté areas against the backdrop of a radiant well-cared-for face. They don't understand why you treat them like this.
When cleansing your skin and applying skincare products, be sure to include the neck and décolleté. Many manufacturers also produce products specifically for these areas, which will also be useful for you.
Rule 9: Always use SPF products
UV rays are present in any weather, both in summer and winter. Prepare for the fact that skincare rules will make sunscreen your faithful companion all year round — fighting photoaging is worth it. Believe me, in 15 years you will thank yourself.
Rule 10: Drink enough water
Water balance is the foundation of skin firmness and elasticity. Even the most expensive creams won’t help if you drink only one glass of water a day and liters of soda or coffee. But the best part is that you can fix this situation right now without any additional costs! Don’t forget to drink your daily water intake, and your skin will thank you.
These simple but effective skincare tips will help you move towards your cherished goal. Yes, this path won’t be quick, but radiant healthy skin will be the best reward for your efforts!
