An outdoor weekend reset is one of the healthiest ways to prevent office burnout, with Mississippi offering a range of natural getaways. You can find parks and experiences in the Appalachian foothills, delta swamps, and along the coast. Each location has something to fit your chosen pace, whether you want to read a book in the fresh air or go for a longer hike.

This guide explores some of the state's most scenic destinations, including the Gulf Islands National Seashore, Tishomingo State Park, Leroy Percy State Park, and Veterans Park.

Coastal Sanctuaries

If you truly want to rest and recharge before Monday, escape to the coast of Mississippi for the weekend. Coastal sounds are extremely calming to your parasympathetic nervous system. Plus, breathing in that ocean air helps improve oxygen flow to the brain while boosting mood-uplifting serotonin.

The Gulf Islands National Seashore is an excellent start. It has everything you'd expect from a coastal getaway, but with the added experience of lush coastal forests and barrier islands. Travelers exploring Mississippi national parks and other outdoor destinations will find plenty of opportunities for recreation and wildlife viewing here, including:

  • Snorkeling

  • Swimming

  • Fishing

  • Cycling

  • Hiking

  • Boating

It's also a chill camp spot, but if you want to enjoy an even gentler pace, there are plenty of places to birdwatch and beachcomb.

The scenic drive is worth it alone, with the tranquil Davis Bayou Area serving as an entry point to the seashore. You can also hike through the bayous while enjoying the sights and sounds of oaks, pines, and the rich coastal marsh.

While at Gulf Island National Seashore, you can take a public ferry or book a private charter to reach Mississippi's barrier islands. The Ship and Cat Islands are the most prominent of the barrier islands; there, you can find white sand beaches, salt marshes, and plenty of wildlife. They're also popular spots for kayaking.

The Appalachian Foothills

If you'd prefer a mountain escape, plan a visit to Mississippi's renowned Tishomingo State Park. This park is the quintessential Appalachian Foothills experience with its moss-covered boulders, lush ferns, and rocky ridges.

You can learn about the geological history of the area or enjoy any of the following activities:

  • Rock climbing

  • Canoeing

  • Hiking

  • Fishing

  • Disc golf

Don't miss an opportunity to snap photos of the park's beautiful waterfalls for your Instagram. It's also a camper's haven, with over 60 RV campsites, furnished cabins, and primitive campsites for more experienced campers.

The Park offers one of the most immersive hiking experiences. There's the famous swinging bridge that hangs over the waters of Bear Creek, offering a panoramic view of the park.

Leroy Percy State Park

If you're seeking a more mindful, peaceful getaway into the woods, try Leroy Percy State Park. One of the state's oldest natural attractions, the park offers a wonderful escape into the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Make sure to bring a camera to capture the park's hardwood forests, black willow trees, and bayous covered in vibrant green duckweed.

Take the park's raised boardwalk through the cypress swamp. You may even catch a glimpse of the park's resident American alligators resting on the logs.

Feel free to explore deeper into the forest to discover more hiking trails, especially shaded trails covered in Spanish moss.

Veterans Park

If you're looking for a quicker day trip, Veterans Park isn't too far away. This lakefront park is over 200 acres and features an aquatic center, fitness trail, and plenty of space to have a relaxing picnic with friends. You can also access the park's three disc golf courses or play a recreational game of softball at the four available fields.

There are plenty of benches and secluded spaces for reading a book or sketching. The park also features various monuments and public sculptures. If you're bringing kids, be sure to check out the popular splash pad or visit LeFleur's Bluff Complex, an educational park for all ages!
