For Spring Summer 2027, MM6 Maison Margiela challenges those assumptions—not by abandoning the wardrobe, but by asking what happens when its most recognizable pieces are allowed to move.
The collection treats everyday dressing as an exercise in transformation. Across womenswear and menswear, familiar garments are repositioned, reconstructed and occasionally doubled, creating new relationships between the body and the clothes that surround it. The result is a wardrobe that feels practical while questioning the conventions that have traditionally defined how clothing is worn.
For womenswear, the transformation is particularly literal. A shirt becomes a skirt, with its original shoulder line relocated to the hips. A V-neck top can function as a bottom, while a skirt is elevated into a dress with its waistline pushed upward. Garments are folded, shifted and fastened into new configurations, while retaining enough of their original construction to remain recognizable.
Rather than treating deconstruction as an abstract design exercise, MM6 approaches it as a practical proposition. Two versions of the same garment can be combined to form a single look, while additional panels allow familiar archetypes to function in unfamiliar positions. Enlarged proportions inspired by dolls’ clothing introduce another visual language, with shrunken silhouettes and simplified closures giving everyday pieces an almost miniature quality.
Menswear follows the same philosophy from another direction. Tailored suits, biker jackets, shirts, T-shirts and trousers remain firmly rooted in the vocabulary of the modern wardrobe, but their construction shifts. Shirt collars and button plackets move away from the center of the body, creating subtle disruptions in otherwise utilitarian pieces.
The collection's approach to construction reinforces that sense of immediacy. Reduced closures, snaps, shrunken proportions and easy fabrics make the garments simple to put on, remove and reposition. Overdyes, starch treatments and painted, papery surfaces further alter familiar materials without obscuring what they originally were.
Accessories receive the same treatment. A glove becomes a bag; another is translated into a five-toed shoe. Glove stitching appears on footwear, while belts take on the proportions of doll accessories. The Soft Bauletto can function traditionally as a bag or collapse beneath the arm, approaching the gesture of wearing rather than simply carrying.
MM6 extends this thinking through its collaboration with Havaianas. The familiar flip-flop becomes a platform for experimentation, with the number six operating as a design device. Soles split into toes, gain an additional toe or multiply into six distinct forms stacked together, transforming an everyday object through repetition and proportion.
There is an understated intelligence to the collection. MM6 does not propose that the conventional wardrobe is obsolete; instead, it suggests that its possibilities are far greater than their prescribed functions. A shirt can become a skirt. A glove can become a bag. A shoe can become something else entirely.
For Spring Summer 2027, MM6 Maison Margiela places the power of interpretation back in the hands of the wearer. The clothes can fall, turn, double, shift sideways or be worn twice. What matters is not where the garment was designed to belong, but where the person wearing it decides it should go.
