New Balance is bringing its 990 franchise into a new chapter with the Made in USA 990v7, a redesigned silhouette that balances more than four decades of running heritage with contemporary performance and cultural relevance. Arriving November 6, 2026, the latest iteration builds on the model’s enduring appeal across sport, fashion, and everyday life, reinforcing the idea that great design does not require abandoning what made it iconic in the first place.

Since its debut in 1982, the 990 has occupied a distinctive position in footwear. Originally developed over four years as a premium running shoe, it became the first running shoe to retail for more than $100, establishing a benchmark for quality and craftsmanship. Over time, its identity expanded beyond athletic performance, finding an audience among fashion enthusiasts, creatives, and consumers drawn to its understated aesthetic and practical comfort. The 990’s evolution reflects a broader shift in how sneakers are understood today: no longer confined to a single purpose, they move between performance, personal style, and cultural expression.

The seventh-generation model arrives under the campaign tagline “Dad’s Back,” a knowing nod to the silhouette’s association with so-called dad sneakers and its subsequent adoption by fashion’s tastemakers. What was once a practical choice for runners and comfort-conscious consumers has become a fixture in contemporary style, challenging the idea that performance footwear and fashion credibility exist in separate categories. The 990’s appeal lies in that duality: it does not need to abandon its utilitarian roots to participate in a broader cultural conversation.

For the 990v7, New Balance follows a design philosophy it describes as “memories from the future,” refining the shoe’s familiar proportions while introducing a more streamlined upper, updated layering, and premium material treatments. Pigskin suede and breathable mesh remain central to the construction, complemented by tumbled leather accents and synthetic suede sway bars. The result preserves the visual language that has made the 990 recognizable while giving the franchise room to evolve.

The most significant developments extend beneath the upper. A softer version of the FuelCell midsole technology introduced with the 990v6 is designed to improve cushioning and energy return. ENCAP technology, the signature CR stability device, and a new TPU midfoot shank provide additional support and guidance. Together, the updates reinforce the shoe’s performance foundation without sacrificing the comfort and versatility that have helped it transition from the running track to everyday wardrobes.

“The epitome of quality and craftsmanship, the 990v7 has been thoughtfully evolved, updated, and reimagined for today's consumer,” says Chris Davis, New Balance Brand President and Chief Marketing Officer. He adds that the franchise’s appeal extends from “marathoners, fashionistas, and comfort enthusiasts around the globe,” reflecting a consumer base united by an appreciation for authenticity, utility, and enduring quality.

That range of appeal informs the campaign supporting the release, which features New Balance ambassadors ROSALÍA, Josh Allen, Cooper Flagg, and IU. Representing music, professional sports, and entertainment, the four personalities reflect the breadth of audiences the 990 has reached throughout its evolution. Their participation also underscores how the sneaker’s identity has grown beyond its original athletic purpose, becoming a recognizable part of individual style across different cultural communities.

The Made in USA designation remains another defining element of the release. New Balance states that its Made in USA footwear contains at least 70% domestic value, although the collection accounts for a limited portion of the brand’s U.S. sales. For the 990v7, American manufacturing is positioned alongside material selection, construction, and performance engineering as part of the franchise’s continued emphasis on quality.

The New Balance Made in USA 990v7 will launch November 6, 2026, at NewBalance.com and select global retailers, with a suggested retail price of $200. The release marks the next evolution of a sneaker whose longevity depends less on reinvention for its own sake than on the ability to make incremental progress without losing its identity.

One-sentence summary: New Balance introduces the Made in USA 990v7, updating its iconic running silhouette with refined materials, enhanced cushioning, and contemporary design while preserving the craftsmanship and cross-generational appeal that have defined the franchise since 1982.
