Sperry and MONSE Reimagine the American Classic, Signaling a New Era for the Boat Shoe

In an era where heritage brands are increasingly looking to fashion’s avant-garde for reinvention, the debut collaboration between Sperry and MONSE arrives as both a cultural reset and a strategic evolution. Unveiled today, the limited-edition Sperry x MONSE Spring/Summer 2026 collection reframes one of American fashion’s most enduring staples—the boat shoe—through a lens of deconstruction, subversion, and modern femininity.
The partnership, which first surfaced during New York Fashion Week in September 2025, marks MONSE’s inaugural step into footwear. It also reflects a broader industry shift: legacy brands are no longer merely preserving their archives—they are actively rewriting them in collaboration with designers who challenge convention.
At the center of the collection is a deliberate reimagining of Sperry’s most recognizable silhouette. The Authentic Original™ 2-Eye Jelly Boat Shoe emerges as a standout, reinterpreted with a tactile, almost translucent sensibility and offered in saturated tones like Mandarin Orange and Seaglass. Elsewhere, the Authentic Original™ 2-Eye Lug Boat Shoe pushes the category further, introducing squared toes, pronounced stitching, and a platform sole that reframes prep through a distinctly contemporary—and notably feminine—point of view.
This tension between heritage and disruption is precisely what makes the collaboration resonate. Founded in 1935 by Paul Sperry, the brand has long been synonymous with maritime utility and understated Americana. Yet, under the stewardship of modern partnerships and a rapidly evolving consumer, Sperry is exploring new territory—less about nostalgia, and more about reinterpretation.
“After two consecutive seasons on the MONSE runway, we’re proud to return to the NYFW stage with an official collaboration,” said Jonathan Frankel, President of Sperry. “The Sperry x MONSE Collection shows how boundless the boat shoe can be and reflects the innovative spirit that the brand has carried for 90 years. This partnership has been a long time in the making, and it shows how a shared vision and dedication can create something transformative.”
For MONSE co-creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, the collaboration represents more than an expansion into accessories—it’s an extension of the brand’s design philosophy. Known for asymmetry, tailoring, and an instinct for controlled disruption, the duo approached Sperry’s DNA with both reverence and irreverence.
“Collaborating with Sperry has been an exciting opportunity to take something classic and reimagine it through the MONSE lens,” Kim and Garcia shared. “For our first foray into footwear, we wanted to create designs that feel modern and truly wearable, while honoring Sperry’s heritage and craftsmanship. This collection explores texture and detail in a way that balances bold, signature MONSE elements with timeless silhouettes, making each pair both functional and full of personality.”
What emerges is a collection that feels less like a seasonal capsule and more like a statement on the future of American style—one where utility meets experimentation, and where even the most familiar forms are open to reinterpretation.
Available beginning March 19, 2026 through select global retailers including Nordstrom and Shopbop, as well as directly via both brands, the Sperry x MONSE collaboration positions itself at the intersection of accessibility and high design.
More importantly, it underscores a growing truth within fashion: heritage is no longer static. In the hands of the right collaborators, it becomes a canvas—one that invites risk, rewards reinvention, and ultimately, defines what comes next.
