Data Reveals The U.S. Is The Music Festival Capital Of The World

With the 2023 music festival season well underway, And GovBall happening right now, there is a new report which focuses on the countries where the most music festivals are being held this year. The team at SlotsMove set out to identify the best locations for live music fans by comparing the festival scene in nearly 40 countries.

The research shows that with 512 music festivals scheduled for 2023, the United States is the ultimate music festival capital of the world. It is home to 18 major festivals with a typical attendance of more than 50 thousand people, as well as to some of the most iconic events in pop culture such as Coachella, Lollapalooza, Summerfest and Rolling Loud.

Performing at GovBall NYC 2023, Amber Mark knows the stage and the pressures of a fresh look each time out. She says,

“Honestly, it's a last-minute decision for me. I have several ideas. Yeah, I actually had a fitting last week where I tried on various outfits. Mm-hmm, yes. But honestly, there are so many options right now, and I'm not sure which one I'll choose. It depends. I've narrowed it down to three options for golf ball, but I'm still unsure about how I'll feel and what I'll end up doing.”

Mark continues,

“Yeah, I mean, ideally, I want to add a pop of color, but I always find myself gravitating towards black. I love anything with rhinestones, sparkles, or glitter. So incorporating that is definitely happening for sure. I've been leaning towards certain UK designers a lot lately, strangely enough, not intentionally, it just happened that way. Mm-hmm, yes. I want to make use of these designers that I've become obsessed with. I'm not sure if I can mention their names or not, but yeah.”

Here are a few key takeaways from the report:

* The United States tops the list of the countries with the most music festivals in 2023 with 512 music festivals, 18 of which draw massive crowds of over 50,000 people

* Of these 512 fests, 169 are rock festivals, 127 are dedicated to electronic music, and 46 are pop music festivals 

* The United Kingdom comes second with 143 festivals this year, followed by the Netherlands with 58

* When we consider the number of music festivals per capita, however, the U.S. drops to the 13th spot - it has 1.5 festivals per 1 million people. In comparison, Malta, #1 in the per capita ranking, has 9 music festivals per million residents

To identify the countries where the most music festivals are being held this year, we explored the festival listings at the largest reliable listing resource for music festivals, Music Festival Wizard. Only nations considered to be of “very high human development” in the United Nations’ Human Development Report for 2021/2022 were analysed. This left us with 39 countries in Europe, the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and Asia and the Middle East.
