Ikea and Virgil Abloh Have Set a Drop Date for their Collaboration
Written by Cassell Ferere
A date has been set for the collaborative designs between furniture and lifestyle brand, Ikea and Virgil Abloh, the design mind behind Off-White and Louis Vuitton Men’s collection. The drop is set for November 1st, 2019, so “mark” your calendar for MARKERAD to be unveiled in the United States.
The name of the collection is Swedish for “marked” and has the omnipresent features that Abloh is known for. Over a year ago, there were leaks of video and images of what has been set to influence the millennial generation as consumers of home goods. Although, economically, Millenials are technically the generation that can’t afford much. Abloh is trying to remedy that by creating limited-edition home goods that would be affordable; “inexpensive yet fashionable”.
“ The ethos of the collection is to add an artful quality to anonymous objects.”
- Virgil Abloh, designer.
This has been a design feature Virgil Abloh has stuck with through his career, starting as a consultant of sorts for Kanye West and his musical aura. Now Abloh plans to bring about a certain life to the things we use without thought. From clocks that read “TEMPORARY”, carpets bared a bold “BLUE” on it, as well as doubling down on the Ikea bag everyone has tucked away for laundry, putting the word “SCULPTURE” on its’ facade.
Set for the mass market, there is still enough hype that these items will fly off the showroom floors and shelves. Abloh is adamant about his approach to design and between fashion on the body and fashion in the home, his vigor remains that “design – could satisfy both practical needs and emotional aspirations.”
This Ikea US collection will be available in limited quantities on November 1st, 2019.
