It seems as the stay-at-home orders remain, social media continues to explode with the next generation of users and Influencers. TikTok has been responsible for the stardom of many, but none like Charli D'Amelio, dancer and budding style icon, who has brought the family into her spotlight with her. Charli, the 16-year-old TikTok user who happens to be the most followed on the platform, is reaching popstar fame that for her 18-year-old sister Dixie who flaunts 29 million followers herself, her mom Heidi, and dad Marc, is hard to avoid.
As good parents, they are supportive of their daughter's interest, even if it's just creating dance moves on the politically controversial video-sharing app. The parents have addressed the matter with skepticism early on. "In the beginning, we were sometimes, 'Why are you doing videos in your room with your bed unmade and clothes on the floor?'" This is something Marc stated to Highsnobiety as concern for his daughter and a reflection of his parenting on the platform. But he realized that it was Charli's audience that would appreciate her authenticity in her presentation and the clothes that would carpet her bedroom floor.
With little resistance, Charli's parents have embraced the success that has ensued. Reasons being that Charli is an advocate of issues such as anti-bullying, climate change, as well as the Black Lives Matter movement, swapping her profile pics on her social media platform for the emblematic prose.
Although threats of being banned in the United States, TikTok is increasing the popularity of the D'Amelio family. Scrutiny from Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, handed down by President Donald Trump claimed that the government was "looking at" banning the video-sharing app. This after the country of India has banned the Chinese owned app out of fear, stating a "threat to sovereignty and integrity." This is without a threat to the young star that Charli is and the fashionista she is becoming.
But TikTok is here to "Make Your Day" and possibly a millionaire. Charli D'Amelio, who has reported to charge $100,000 per sponsored post according to Cosmopolitan, spreads the love to her family including them in her life and on her feed. Performing routines with her sister Dixie seems just as they can be seen together in their latest online video ad for Hollister Jeans with the brand’s “Jeanealogists” Bill Nye. Charli and her sister have been known to bust out moves but in denim that allows for it. In the Hollister ad, you can see Charli and sister Dixie’s choreographed kicks, spins, and body-rolls as they find the perfect fitting jean, guided by the expertise of Bill Nye.
Dixie can keep up with Charli’s dance moves as well as hold a note, proven with a newly minted singing career. Unlike her dance school sister, the drama school kid Dixie, who is more of the comedian on TikTok, has acted in a Brat TV series called Attaway General as a character named Georgia. Dixie has also worked with brands on photo shoots and videos, including Dermalogica and Polo Ralph Lauren where she showcased 5 different ways to style a Mini Sloane bag on her TikTok account. On top of all that, she has released her debut single, "Be Happy" which reached the Billboard Charts at 41 on the Emerging Artist list and has accumulated over 40 million views on YouTube.
Charli details to Highsnobiety about her parents' talents, or former lives for that matter. "My mom grew up a competition dancer and sometimes does TikTok dances with me." She compares her mom’s talent to her dad who’s dance style is more “raw; my dad did breakdancing,” she reveals. This talented family is capable of doing more than soaking up the limelight of fame. Charli has also collaborated with celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and Bebe Rexha in the process.
With 70 million-plus followers on TikTok, Charli can demand such a price from sponsors and has used this reach to land her a 2020 Super Bowl commercial, apart from her other brand sponsorships like Hollister or Procter & Gamble where she was asked to create a #DistanceDance for promoting social distancing during the current pandemic. She made an astonishing $1 million for her feature in Sabra Hummus' Super Bowl commercial according to Cosmopolitan, via Celebrity Net Worth.
Charli has appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and will be included in the upcoming animated film StarDog and TurboCat as the voice of Tinker. Not to mention, she had a front-row seat and Prada's Fall/Winter 2020 fashion week show in Milan this past February. Further pushing her style direction, she was photographed with fashion elites like Derek Blasberg, who is certainly worth being photographed with as he has a fashion and beauty partnership with YouTube and formerly of Vanity Fair’s web series “Our Man On The Street” and the host of CNN Style.
