Travel is, for many people, one of the biggest splurge events in their life. Whether it's traveling within your province or country or traveling halfway across the world, travel is, to this kind of person, an experience to be venerated for its ability to bring a new kind of magic into the everyday. From a weekend away at a BnB tucked away in the countryside to a month-long European summer escapade, travel makes things feel a little more special than they do when one is in the mental space of a “normal” week at home.

As this kind of traveller, any escape will set your soul alight with inspiration and wonder, but there are a few bucket list-style trips that one probably sees lit up like a Broadway marquee in their mind’s eye. Watching the Aurora Borealis dance across the pitch black of a Scandinavian night; swimming in crystal clear turquoise water with dolphins and manta rays; walking mountain trails that have only ever been trodden by a tiny percentage of the earth’s population…these are things that stand out from the crowd. These are the ultra-unique experiences that globetrotters talk of in hushed tones, hoping to experience one day. If you need a little inspiration to get your own personal globetrotting bucket list started, look no further.

1. African Safari- Kenya or Tanzania

An African safari or experience of some sort can usually be found on most travel bucket lists, and there's a clear reason for that: the majesty of the continent, its landscapes and its wildlife is unlike anything you've ever encountered. For many people, Africa seems like another world, but experiencing it is within your grasp if you plan well.

To begin with, the best safari lodges and locations do have access to private runways, so book a private jet to get you all the way to your destination without any unnecessary stops. Both Kenya and Tanzania have incredible options available and display the wild beauty of Africa at its absolute best.

2. Expedition Cruise- Antarctica

From one extreme to the other: from one of the warmest parts of the world to the coldest. Antarctica is a place that 0.006% of the population never gets to see: a truly magical wilderness. Booking a spot on an expedition cruise means that you’ll have a warm bed every night (no pods or camping for you!) in one spot but also get to see towering glaciers, walrus, penguins, whales and the coldest desert on the planet. It's one of the most remote places on earth and will no doubt entirely steal your heart.

3. Exploring Patagonia- Chile and Argentina

Patagonia is overwhelming to the senses. There's so much there that the average person doesn't get to see on an average day: enormous glaciers, the brightest turquoise lakes, jagged peaks watching overhead, colorful hills, strange animals… it is a truly vast wilderness that only the most tenacious and determined ever get to experience. Enjoy conservation-focused travel and challenging hikes across Chile and Argentina.

4. Northern Lights Adventure- Norway or Iceland

The Aurora Borealis are the closest thing to visible magic that human eyes will ever see: ribbons of dancing light that fill the sky and break open the long dark of Scandinavian nights. The Northern Lights can be seen throughout Scandinavia, but Iceland and Norway are both excellent choices for not only the lights but also adventure and sea travel. The fjords, the gorgeous, rustic seaside towns, and the pervasive fika (coffee break) coziness all add to the experience in unique and exciting ways.

5. Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail- Peru

Another truly remote and very rarely seen in real life destination: the great Lost City of the Incas. Perched 7,710 feet above sea level in the Peruvian Andes Mountains asks a lot of those who wish to see it: the classic Inca trail is26 miles (42 km), and typically completed in 4 days and 3 nights; the short Inca trail covers 8 miles (13 km), generally takes 6 to 7 hours in a single day or 2 days total and the Salkantay Trek (a more rugged alternative) spans 45 to 50 miles (72–80 km) and typically takes 5 days to complete. This is one of the world's most valuable archeological sites, and laying eyes on it is a privilege for the brave and undaunted to earn.

6. Luxury Train Trip- The Swiss Alps

As far as views go, the Swiss Alps are hard to beat. The luxury train services that operate over, under and around these magnificent peaks provide panoramic views of the Alps themselves, picturesque m mountain villages, sparkling glacier-fed lakes and deep, verdant valleys. Enjoy the comfort of luxury service without sacrificing the number of things you get to see.

7. Cherry Blossom Journey- Japan

The Sakura season in Japan is a swirl of soft colours and skies, thriving parks, ancient temples, vibrant city celebrations and centuries-old traditions. Visiting Shinjuku Gyoen and Chidorigafuchi Moat in Tokyo, Maruyama Park and the Philosopher's Path in Kyoto, Himeji Castle in Hyogo, and Mount Yoshino in Nara will provide you with a visually stunning and artistically inspiring view of these soft flurries of pink and white blooms.

8. Galapagos Island Hopping- Ecuador

This is, without question, the ultimate island escape. The Galapagos Islands are synonymous with bright tropical life: teeming with unique animals such as giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and the hilariously but partially accurately named Blue Footed Boobie. These are the islands where Charles Darwin began to formulate his theory of evolution, so expect to see an incredible array of natural wonders on land and underwater.

The World is Your Oyster

These premier, wild, luxurious, otherworldly, and magnificent destinations have all earned their mentions on this bucket list. They each provide a one-of-a-kind experience that will stay with you for all your days.
