On a crisp March morning, the streets of New York transformed into a moving stage for endurance, community, and performance as more than 30,000 runners gathered for the United Airlines NYC Half. Produced by New York Road Runners, the 2026 race delivered a milestone moment: 30,229 athletes crossed the finish line, making it the largest half marathon in both event and NYRR history—and the biggest in the United States.

The 13.1-mile route remains one of the most visually striking courses in distance running. Beginning near Prospect Park, runners surged across the historic Brooklyn Bridge—the only race in history to do so—before passing Grand Central Terminal and charging through Times Square, one of only two days each year the Crossroads of the World closes to traffic. The race ultimately concludes inside Central Park, delivering a finish line that feels as iconic as the city itself.

For the run, I laced up the Ellipse, a new performance silhouette from New Balance designed with one philosophy in mind: that the smallest details can define a runner’s entire experience over distance.

Cushioning That Carries The Distance

At the heart of the Ellipse sits New Balance’s Fresh Foam X midsole, engineered to provide cushioning without increasing overall weight. Over the opening miles in Brooklyn, the difference is immediately noticeable. The cushioning distributes comfort evenly throughout the sole rather than concentrating it in one section, allowing the foot to settle naturally with each stride.

That balance becomes especially important over 13.1 miles, where consistent impact absorption can make the difference between cruising into Manhattan or grinding through the final stretch.

Bounce, Recoil, And Momentum

Where the Ellipse truly reveals its character is in its responsiveness. Each landing produces a subtle bounce, followed by a quick recoil from the sole that encourages forward motion. The sensation isn’t overly aggressive—it’s controlled, almost rhythmic, creating a steady cadence that pairs naturally with the long stretches of open road that define the NYC Half.

Running downhill off the Brooklyn Bridge and into the heart of Manhattan, the shoe’s rebound provides a quiet assist, turning momentum into motion with minimal effort.

Lightweight Efficiency

Weighing just 273 grams (9.6 ounces), the Ellipse sits comfortably within the lightweight performance category. Over distance, that reduced weight translates to something more valuable than speed—it delivers efficiency.

With every stride, the shoe’s engineered mesh upper maintains breathability while keeping the structure stable. The frame feels almost invisible as the miles accumulate, allowing runners to focus less on the mechanics of running and more on the experience of the city unfolding around them.

A Record-Breaking Race

This year’s professional field underscored the race’s global significance, featuring 26 Olympians and Paralympians, 16 national record holders, and athletes representing 17 countries.

In the women’s open division, Kenyan champion Hellen Obiri delivered a commanding performance, capturing her second NYC Half title in 1:06:33, setting a new event record. Fellow Kenyan Sharon Lokedi finished second in 1:07:10, while Great Britain’s Megan Keith, a New Balance athlete, secured third place in a remarkable half-marathon debut.

On the men’s side, South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt made history in his NYRR debut, winning in 59:30 and becoming the first South African to claim the race’s men’s open title.

The wheelchair divisions also delivered standout moments. Great Britain’s Eden Rainbow‑Cooper captured her first NYC Half title with a dominant victory, while American Paralympian Daniel Romanchuk returned from injury to secure his third men’s wheelchair division title.

When Culture Meets The Course

While elite athletes set records, the NYC Half is equally defined by the personalities and stories moving through the field.

Among the notable runners was rapper and media personality N.O.R.E. and his Run Champs team, who crossed the finish line in 2:15:38 after recently completing his first TCS New York City Marathon with his “Run Champs” crew. Broadway star Jordan Litz finished in 1:28:22, fresh off a historic five-year run as Fiyero in the musical Wicked.

“Racing the United Airlines NYC Half was unbelievable,” Litz said following the race. “Running through Times Square and the theater district, where I’ve performed for the last five years, felt like an encore performance.”

Other notable finishers included Peloton instructor Matt Wilpers, journalist Errol Barnett, and former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber—a reminder that the race draws athletes from across culture, media, and sport.

The Finish Line Perspective

Crossing the finish inside Central Park, the Ellipse proved something simple yet essential: the best running shoes rarely demand attention. They support the runner quietly, mile after mile.

The Fresh Foam X cushioning absorbed the city’s relentless pavement. The rebound kept momentum alive across bridges and avenues. And the lightweight frame ensured each stride required just a little less effort than the last.

In a race defined by spectacle and scale, that subtle efficiency becomes the difference between simply finishing—and truly enjoying the run.
