The Isle of Wight is made for exploring on foot. With dramatic cliffs, quiet bays, open downs, and long sea views, every part of the coast feels a little different.

The Island has more than 500 miles of designated footpaths, including plenty of routes beside the sea. Whether you want a gentle afternoon stroll or a full-day hike, here are seven coastal walks worth adding to your trip.

1. Tennyson Down to The Needles

Few Isle of Wight walks can match the scenery around Tennyson Down. Follow the high chalk landscape west and you will eventually reach Alum Bay and the famous Needles.

The wider Tennyson Trail runs for 14 miles from Carisbrooke to Alum Bay and passes the Tennyson Monument along the way. For a shorter coastal experience, start around Freshwater and explore the western section.

2. Yarmouth to Brighstone

If you are ready for a challenge, this 14-mile route offers some of the Island's finest coastal scenery. The walk takes around five hours and passes Alum Bay, The Needles, Tennyson Down, and Freshwater Bay.

It is a brilliant choice for walkers who want to see several famous landmarks in one day.

3. Sandown to Ryde

This 12-mile route combines classic seaside views with hills, woodland, beaches, and harbour scenery.

Starting from Sandown, the trail climbs towards Bembridge Down before continuing through Whitecliff Bay and Bembridge on the way to Ryde. Wightlink rates the route as moderate and suggests allowing around four hours.

4. Headon Warren to Freshwater Bay

For wild coastal beauty, try walking from Headon Warren towards The Needles and Freshwater Bay.

Expect open heathland, bright chalk cliffs, and wide views across the sea. The area is also excellent for birdwatching, especially during winter and early spring.

Bring a camera because the landscape changes constantly along this stretch.

5. Ventnor and the South Coast

Ventnor is a great starting point for a more relaxed coastal walk. Wander beside the beach and promenade before continuing towards nearby coves and coastal paths.

The town's sheltered setting and unusual microclimate give this part of the Island a different feel, with colourful plants and sweeping sea views.

6. Bembridge and Whitecliff Bay

The east coast offers a quieter kind of beauty. Around Bembridge, walkers can enjoy views over Whitecliff Bay before exploring countryside, woodland, and nearby downs.

One popular circular route around Bembridge Down and Brading Marsh covers about 6.5 miles and includes part of the coastal path.

7. Hamstead Cliff to Brook Bay

The seven-mile Hamstead Trail gives you much more than sea views. Starting near Hamstead Cliff, it crosses salt marshes, woodland, countryside, and downs before reaching Brook Bay.

At low tide, you may even see the remains of a fossilised forest at Brook Bay.

Good footwear, water, and a light waterproof jacket can make coastal walking much more enjoyable. Check weather, tide, and path conditions before setting off, especially around cliffs and beaches.
