Almost everyone has seen it. An uncle wearing a shiny ring on his index finger, a neighbor claiming that her profession changed for the better when she started wearing an emerald, a friend who put on a blue stone and a silver band once and never took it off. Gemstones have been present in the life of human beings for thousands of years, and in Vedic astrology, they are much more than just a beautiful piece of jewelry. People believe that they work like small lenses that make a person receive energy coming from a specific planet more steadily and intensely.

But it needs to be said straight away because many gem sellers forget about it that a gem is not a magic stick and its value depends on the stone taken, its quality and the way of wearing it. A beautiful gem worn carelessly can do absolutely nothing, while a wrong gem can drive one crazy. Therefore, let us take our time and analyze the issue the way a wise person would do it over a cup of tea.

Step One: Understand Your Chart Prior to Purchasing

Don't choose a gemstone just because it looks good or because your friend improved their life using one. Each person has a unique birth chart, with planets in it functioning differently. A planet that is good in one chart may act as a negative influence in another.

Have a consultation with a professional astrologer, telling them your birthdate, time and exact place. Ask them about the planet that needs help. Normally the stone is associated with the lord of the ascendant, or with the strong planet. Ask for a plain explanation of the answer. If someone tries to sell you an expensive stone without proper explanation, just leave.

Guidelines for Using Gemstones

Before diving into specifics regarding each particular stone, certain basic rules apply to most stones:

• Naturally and unmodified gemstones should be used. Treated and synthetic stones are said to easily lose their power. Always ask for an authenticity certificate.

• Your stone should touch your skin. This requires that the back of the setting remains open so that it will be in contact with your finger.

• Gemstone weight should correspond to your budget and body. Gemstone weight is measured in ratti (one ratti = approximately 0.91 carats). A general rule of thumb is one ratti for every ten kilograms of weight, however, expert advice must be followed.

• Choose a proper day and time for wearing it. Each of the planets has a weekday and hora (planet hour) to wear the stone, although it is better to do it on the FULL MOON.

• The process involves purification followed by energizing. The first step is to cleanse the stone by chanting the planet's mantra.

General Purification Ritual

Whichever stone you choose, the basic routine remains unchanged. The night before the day you wear the stone in a piece of jewelry, put it into a bowl filled with raw milk mixed with Ganga jal (or filtered water) and add a few drops of honey and a tulsi leaf. Allow it to sit overnight.

On the chosen day, take a bath, wear new clothes, and sit in a quiet place facing east. Light a lamp or some incense and take the stone out of the bowl and rinse it in water. Hold it in your hands and close your eyes and recite the planet mantra 108 times with peace of mind. After that, put it on the right finger and thank the planet.

Yellow Sapphire (Pukhraj): The Gemstone Associated with Jupiter

Yellow sapphire is believed to be the gemstone connected to Jupiter, the heavenly body associated with wisdom, marital life, children, teaching, and good luck. The species of people who are not able to make progress in studies, marriage and other important aspects of life often wear yellow sapphire if their horoscope gives positive results on Jupiter.

• Day and time: Thursday morning, the morning that is ruled by Jupiter.

• Metal and finger: Gold, particularly worn on the index finger of the right hand.

• Weight: It typically comes in weigh between three and seven carats as recommended.

• Mantra: "Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah", repeated 108 times.

A lot of people also offer yellow flowers or some sugar to Jupiter before they wear the ring. It’s a small gesture that has a big meaning.

Emerald (Panna): The Gemstone Associated with Mercury

Mercury presides over the natural emerald gemstone which serves as an aid for those who need to speak and think clearly: students, writers, traders, communicators. It is said to relieve stress if Mercury is in a strong position.

• Day: Wednesday morning during Mercury's hora.

• Metal: The ring must be made of either gold or silver and placed on the little finger of the right hand.

• Weight of the stone: About 3 or 6 ratti.

• Mantra: "Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah" repeated 108 times.

An ideal emerald should be a deep green color and sufficiently transparent. A few minor flaws are acceptable for an emerald, so do not worry if it has a small feather-like line. A spotless stone that is inexpensive is probably not the best deal.

Blue Sapphire (Neelam):  The Stone that represents Saturn

Blue Sapphire gemstone is believed to be the swiftest of gemstones, making it potentially dangerous as well. This gemstone represents Saturn, which is associated with principles like discipline and karma, and responsible for bringing successes and failures in one’s life.

This stone should never be worn even if the person believes in astrology or spirituality because for blue sapphire to work it has to first be tested. The person should first keep a blue sapphire stone wrapped in a blue cloth for three days under the pillow or wear the stone on a cord for three days. The person has to note down his/her dreams, and feelings or his/her state of health. Good sleep and undisturbed days suggest that the person can wear the stone, otherwise he/she has to put it away if he/she experiences stress or misfortune.

• Day and time: Saturday evening, during Saturn's hour, ideally after sunset.

• Metal and finger: Silver or panchadhatu, worn on the middle finger of the right hand.

• Weight: Typically 3 to 5 ratti, never less than the astrologer recommends.

• Mantra: "Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaischaraya Namah," 108 times.

Ruby : Gemstone for Sun

Ruby Gemstone is also known as the Stone of the Sun when it is connected to the sun's power, 'the source of vitality, command, confidence, and leadership'. This stone is used mostly by the people who are involved in government, management, and public life.

In simple words, the ruby is associated with individuals who have lost confidence in themselves. It is also known as a stone associated with father figures, heart health, and dignity.

• Day and time: Sunday morning, at sunrise, or in the hora of the sun

• Metal: Gold, on the right ring finger

• Weight: 3 – 5 ratti

• Mantra: "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" 108 times

After wearing the ruby, one should offer water to the sun when it rises. This is a good habit and it gives a person a peaceful experience and makes him aware of the benefits of this stone.

Other Popular Gemstones at a Glance

Besides the four big names above, several other stones are commonly worn. Here is a quick reference you can discuss with your astrologer.

Each of these follows the same pattern: purify, chant the planet's mantra, and wear it on the right day. Diamond and cat's eye in particular are strong and sensitive stones, so personal guidance matters even more with them.

Taking Care of Your Gemstone

Gemstones are meant to be companions rather than decorative items. Clean them with warm water and a soft cloth every week. If the gemstone is fragile, it’s best to take it off while exercising, cleaning, or sleeping in an uncomfortable position.

If the gemstone breaks or starts losing its brightness, consult an astrologist to see if it needs to be replaced. The effort will not be in vain, since a gemstone cannot be worn by other individuals as it is thought to adjust to one’s energy.

It is also a good idea to conjure up an energizing mantra for one’s gemstone whenever it seems no longer effective after particular events.

Some Honest Words Before You Start

Astrology is an ancient system of belief and a practice that includes many things. Gemstones are one of the tools of astrology, but they cannot resolve your problems with guaranteed results. Too much cannot be expected from their use. The most successful of gemstone users are those who believe in the power of gemstones and their use, work hard, and treat other people with kindness. You may regard your gem as a reminder of the quality that a certain respective planet symbolizes: reason for Jupiter, logic for Mercury, discipline for Saturn, self-confidence for the Sun.

Buy the gem from trusted sellers and never decide on impulse. In case your budget is limited, a smaller gem has more chances to be effective than a bigger one.

Wear your gemstone with appreciation and give it time. When the right gem meets the right person at the right moment, everything becomes possible.
